The first Louis Vuitton Cup took place in Newport, Rhode Island in 1983. At the time, the winner of the first Louis Vuitton Cup, Australia II, became the first challenger in the history of the America's Cup to beat the defender: prior to the first Louis Vuitton Cup, no challenger had ever found success in the America's Cup. The Louis Vuitton Cup-America's Cup relationship is among the longest and most successful in the sport. Louis Vuitton will also serve as Official Timekeeper for America's 34th Cup. “We are thrilled to continue our partnership," said Yves Carcelle, Chairman and CEO of Louis Vuitton Malletier.
